Work on a specialized aircraft torpedo, known as 'Project G-6', began in February 1925. This was discontinued in 1926 in favor of making additional modifications to the aerial version of the Mark 7. However, this did not prove advantageous and the G-6 program was resurrected in 1927. This was formally designated as Mark 13 in August 1930, but in October work was stopped again as the USN had now called into question the entire future of the torpedo bomber. Dive bombers were now in favor, so much so that the new USS Ranger (CV-4) was designed completely without torpedo storage. Interest in torpedo planes was not entirely lost and a new, lighter-weight 1,000 lbs. (454 kg) torpedo was considered for future planes. This design proved impractical, so the Mark 13 development project was revived once again in July 1931. The first successful run of a Mark 13 torpedo was made in March 1932 with the second prototype making 30 knots during a run of over 6,000 yards (5,500 m). Aerial testing followed in 1935 with at least 23 drops made between 27 May and 1 October and twenty more made in 1936. Finally, in 1938 the Mark 13 became the first specifically-designed aircraft torpedo accepted into service in the USN. This became the most common US airborne torpedo of World War II. Markedly different from airborne torpedoes of other navies in that it was short and fat vs. short and thin. Also different in its relatively low speed and long range. A total of 17,000 were produced during World War II.

A total of 156 Mark 13 Mod 0 torpedoes were produced which was enough to provide two loads for each of the four 18-plane torpedo squadrons assigned to the pre-war carrier fleet plus a dozen spares. Mod 0 differed from later mods by having a rail-type tail in which the propellers were in front of the rudders. This was the only US torpedo to ever have this feature. The Newport Torpedo Station was unhappy with arrangement for reasons unknown and the Mod 1 entered service in 1940 with a conventional propeller arrangement, as can be seen in the photographs above. Unfortunately and unlike the Mod 0, the Mod 1 proved to be an unreliable weapon, with only one of ten torpedoes dropped by VT-6 during an exercise in July 1941 having a hot, straight and normal run. Of the others, four sank and could not be recovered while the other five experienced erratic runs.
These problems continued into the early war years, with a mid-1943 analysis of 105 torpedoes dropped at speeds in excess of 150 knots found that 36 percent ran cold (did not start), 20 percent sank, 20 percent had poor deflection performance, 18 percent gave unsatisfactory depth performance, 2 percent ran on the surface and only 31 percent gave a satisfactory run. The total exceeds 100 percent as many torpedoes had more than one defect. The early models were further handicapped by the need to drop them low and slow - typically 50 feet (15 m) and 110 knots which made the torpedo planes carrying them vulnerable to attack.
These problems were greatly reduced by the latter years of the war. Torpedoes had fin stabilizers, nose drag rings and tail shroud rings added, all of which worked to slow the torpedo after it was dropped so that it struck the water nose-first and at an acceptable speed. These improved the drop characteristics such that the recommended aircraft maximum launch parameters were increased to a height of 2,400 feet (730 m) and a speed of 410 knots.
A lanyard was attached to the tail of the torpedo. When dropped, the lanyard tripped a starting lever, but a water trip delay valve prevented the combustion flask from lighting off until the torpedo had entered the water. When dropped at 150 knots or more, the torpedo would enter the water at an angle of between 26 and 30 degrees. The water needed to be at least 150 feet deep (45 m) and the torpedo assumed its preset running depth after water travel of 300 yards (275 m). The exploder mechanism was armed after water travel of 200 yards (180 m). Depth could be set up to 50 feet (15 m).
The addition of the nose drag ring improved aerodynamic performance by stabilizing the torpedo in flight and reduced air speed by about 40 percent. It also acted as a shock absorber when the torpedo struck the water. The tail shroud ring improved the water run by reducing hooks and broaches and by eliminating much of the water roll which had characterized the earlier Mark 13s. Hot, straight and normal runs now approached 100 percent. To speed availability of the much improved torpedo, the Bureau of Ordnance had tail assemblies built with the shroud ring attached and then shipped these to the fleet for upgrading the existing inventory. By the fall of 1944, the modified torpedo was in general use by the front-line carrier units which were enthusiastic in their praise. On one occasion in early 1945, six torpedoes were dropped from altitudes between 5,000 and 7,000 feet (1,500 to 2,100 m). Five out of the six were observed to make their runs hot, straight and normal. By the end of the war, the USN considered the Mark 13 to be the best aircraft torpedo produced by any nation and it remained in service until 1951.
The Mark 13 has the distinction of having been the last torpedo used by by the US Navy in combat and the world's last use of aerial torpedoes in combat (as of December 2010). On 1 May 1951, following the failure of conventional aerial attacks with bombs, the Navy decided to use torpedoes against the sluice gates of the Hwachon Dam, located on the Pukham River just north of the 38th parallel. The dam waters were being used by the North Koreans to aid their own troop movements and hinder those of the Allies. USS Princeton CV-37 sent five AD-4 and three AD-4N Skyraiders into action and these planes each launched a single Mark 13 torpedo against the dam. One torpedo was a dud and another ran erratic, but the other six blew open the flood gates, successfully ending the North Korean control of the river water.

This is the version of AKR2 I started almost immediately after AKR1 became successful. As you can see, I was already more capable a game maker. But it still wasn’t up to the standard I wanted for the sequel, due to my not quite up to task programming skills and lack of planning, so I cancelled production after only one level.
For a couple of years I held off on starting up development again. My benchmark was, I wanted to be able to make the enemies know not to walk off ledges without hardcoding in limits for each instance. Seems laughably simple to me now. But I needed the game to one up the first one in every way.
It was easier to put up than I thought because there was already a mechanism for switching powerups implemented that I had forgotten about, which saved me a lot of digging through nearly decade old code. I was also able to snag the Actionscript 1 preloader from AKR1. Reusing the image from the AKR2 Alpha video made this write up the only real work involved with putting it up.
Why I scrapped it:
The powerups in the Alpha version are mostly pretty crappy. The fireball plows through enemies and is overpowered. The hammer is way too hard to land a hit with, since you can only throw one at a time. With the exception of the wing, most of the rest of the attacks had pitiful range and no real applications. Many of them would work better in a Kirby style game, but in a Mario game where getting hit once loses your ability, the learning curve is too steep. And even when you get used to them, they still suck.
The physics are also pretty wonky. Koopa runs more like Sonic than Mario, taking something like 8 block lengths to stop from full speed. And people called the finished AKR2 slippery! The jumping is weirdly floaty, which together with the running makes for a very difficult time platforming. I was really excited to have actual momentum in my physics, but I never took the time to get it feeling right.

Then there’s the camera. It’s locked onto a position centered just above Koopa’s head. So when you jump, you lose sight of the ground, and even worse, any enemies you may be attempting to stomp. It’s also far too zoomed in. I went with 40×40 blocks instead of the previous game’s 32×30 (don’t ask) to make the math easier, but it resulted in having too few blocks on the screen at one time, making it hard to see what’s coming. I tried making the screen bigger, but it lagged pretty badly (this was 2006, so computers sucked, and my coding wasn’t especially efficient) so I ended up going for a more traditional power of two based size for the actual game, 32×32. Why I stuck with the default Flash stage size, I can’t explain.
Long story short, I wasn’t satisfied with this build, so I scrapped it.

Hope this is the correct place. I'm recording an acoustic piano with a recently purchased AT2020 USB+, and I'm having some issues with quality after the fact. I suppose for the sake of simplicity I'll paste my email to Audio Technica support here; I'm sure the people here have probably seen this before.
Hello! I received my microphone certified refurbished from Amazon about a month ago. At the moment, I am making a recording of a Yamaha grand piano. Based off of videos/comments on the internet, I believe my current setup does not produce a quality of audio that the microphone should probably be capable of. Right off the bat, I need to mention that I am recording in Mono (one microphone), so this may affect quality. I asked a friend with prior audio experience to describe the issue. After listening through my ATH-M50X headphones, he notes that the recording sounds muffled and low fidelity, the piano's sound is missing its brilliance/shimmer, and there there is a lack of overtones; all combined, it sounds as if there were a blanket in front of the mic. He mentioned that recording in stereo would most definitely improve the sound, but the microphone should probably not be producing that sound. I'm unable to record in stereo for now (budget) but I plan to in the future. He asked if the mic came with any EQ software, or any way to adjust it. He also listened through the live headphone jack monitor and noted that the mic is extremely sensitive, so he suspects it could be some sort of driver issue. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Windows USB Mic Driver just to be sure. I record using Audacity, and have made sure that all recording settings match. (Windows properties and Audacity are both set to 48000hz, 2 channel, 16 bit.) I also followed the official Audio-Technica guide to microphone placement, and have optimized my placement based off of what it instructs. Is there anything I'm missing that would improve audio quality? Thanks!
Anyone have any ideas? I can rerecord if any settings need to be changed, but it would be inconvenient. Is there any way I can fix the audio with Audacity or Adobe Audition? The IOGEAR GSR202 is a TAA compliant USB Common Access Card Reader for military, government and even private sector workers who need everyday. Under 'Annotate' from the top menu has 'signature' with no option of my attacted CAC card. Under Annotate-Form-Signature. Places a signature box on the page but when I save and reopen there is no option to sign with my CAC. I do have a CAC with reader pluged in and a green light on the reader. IOGEAR's USB Common Access Card Readers require the card to be inserted directly into the reader where electrical contacts retrieve the data stored in the card’s chipset. IOGEAR’s physical contact readers are less prone to misalignment, which helps to eliminate the possibility of being misread.

This can make it appear that your certificates are issued by roots other than the DoD Root CA 2 and can prevent access to DoD websites.

Lately, I have read more and more individuals preaching the sonic virtues of FLAC with literally no idea what they are talking about. They spout annoying, misleading drivel that has no basis in reality whatsoever. Let’s learn about FLAC, why it’s good, and why it isn’t, shall we?
What in the fuck is “FLAC”?
FLAC is an audio encoding format. It’s also a very good one for a number of reasons. FLAC is a “lossless” format, meaning none of the data from the source recording is compressed or removed (assuming you use the same bit depth [not the same thing as bit rate] and frequency range). This is inarguably a good thing. Lossless is the word of the year (or last 3) among audiophiles, but the implications of lossless have been twisted and manipulated in ways that are just not factually supported.
Why is FLAC awesome (and is it awesome)?
Yes, FLAC is awesome. Really, it is – as much as I am annoyed by FLAC purists, FLAC has a real place in the digital audio world that should not be overlooked.
You probably know of one other lossless audio format (even if you don’t know it’s lossless) called .WAV. Yep, that same, good ‘ol format that your Windows system sounds are encoded in (though that’s 8-bit and usually mono). WAV preserves 100% of audio information in 16-bit 44.1KHz stereo format when ripping audio from a CD.
FLAC is better than WAV for two reasons. First, it does everything WAV does (lossless audio), but in a much smaller package (WAV is extremely inefficient in its use of space). Second, it allows the use of more tags (including “illegal” tags in Windows) for marking files. That’s it. Otherwise, same juice, different label. WAV does have the advantage of being much more editing / DJ-friendly (all computers do native WAV decode, meaning less work for the CPU), but that’s not really relevant to what we’re talking about here.
This gets us to why FLAC is awesome. It’s all about preservation and archiving! FLAC uses less space than WAV, and allows more precise tagging, making it ideal as a long-term digital storage medium for audio. Many audiophiles – rightly – love FLAC for this reason.
This is why MP3’s are bad for archiving. MP3’s, unlike FLAC, have something of a poor generational half-life. You start with an MP3 rip of a CD – even at 256Kbps, you’ve already lost audio information – you can never get those bits back. That MP3 then gets sent to a friend of yours, who burns it on a CD. More data lost (probably a fair bit, too). Your friend loses the digital original, and re-rips the MP3 from the CD to give it to a friend – by now, there is a very noticeable loss in audio quality in the file. Errors and irregularities have started popping up, and in the strictly archival sense, the song is now basically worthless as a record of the original.
Why FLAC isn’t awesome (read: it’s not because it “sounds better”).
The reason most audiophiles like FLAC has very little to do with the actual quality of the audio. Saying you use FLAC because it “sounds better” is like saying you only drink your wine at 53.7 degrees Fahrenheit because that is the “best temperature.” To both people making such statements, I would have this to say: get over yourself. Not only is it objectively unsupported, it makes you look like kind of an asshole.
You store your audio in the most optimal format available because that means that whenever you do finally decide to make copies, burn CDs, or transcode it, you’re using the best source possible. You don’t buy a $100,000 wine cellar so your wine is at a 53.7 degree drinking temperature, you buy it so your wine lasts for many years – again, it’s all about preservation.
Yes, FLAC has the complete audio source, and from a strictly technical perspective, is qualitatively superior to even a 320Kbps MP3. However, anyone claiming to be able to consistently tell the difference between the two correctly in a true blind test is just lying. A properly encoded* 256Kbps MP3 or AAC is virtually indistinguishable from its FLAC counterpart in a “better vs. worse” sense even with very good audio equipment. People talk about hearing cymbals and “dense” music more authentically through FLAC because just they’re looking for a justification for their beliefs.
*Yes, there are bad MP3 encoders out there. Eg, old versions of LAME – and they do sound worse and are more error / artifact-prone.
Unless you’re using an audio setup that reaches into the thousands upon thousands of dollars, sorry, I just refuse to believe you can hear the difference unless you’ve got pitch-perfect ears or have spent years and years doing professional audio work and know exactly what to listen for. Even many of those people will tell you that, if the difference is there, it doesn’t matter – your ears aren’t an audio-measuring supercomputer, much like your tastebuds aren’t a mass spectrometer.

Good game but needs more game mechanics in my opinion. I think it would be much better if you added a battle of the mind kind of game mechanic to the brainwashing with parasite part. And maybe even a new route for when the brain parasite is attached to the player. There is already the one that the parasite completely brainwashes us and when we become equals.. So how about a certain path that would allow us to take control and somehow leads to a master of the hive mind kinda thing that allows the player to control the parasites and those they have turned to brainwashed slaves using the parasites And a psychic connection(hive mind) thing through the parasites? It would make it so there would be a dominant route where player becomes a dominant hive master Who will use the parasites to rule over all, a submissive route where they become a submissive breeding/infection tool for the parasites and a partnership route when they help the parasites to take over everyone as an equal partner.

And in case you're still working on this project, I think you should know that path strings on Linux (at least on Manjaro Linux using the Opera browser) appear to case sensitive. For example, the folder for that doctor images for the beginning of the game has a capital D, but the image path in the html file has a lower case d, causing those two images to not load. I'm actually in the process of running through all the paths and checking that they're the correct case. If you're interested in knowing any others I find, I'd be happy to help

There is a new mode coming to Madden NFL 21, and it’s bringing the virtual gridiron action to the yard… literally.
Announced today (Aug.5), Madden NFL 21’s big new mode is called “The Yard,” and it’s a homage to the backyard football action we all grew playing and loved as kids. The gameplay is described by EA Sports as “fast-paced, small-sided,” basically the same kind of football action you experience in arcade-style titles like EA Big’s NFL Street for example.
But that is not all that is coming with “The Yard.” The mode will also introduce a new in-depth avatar creation tool called the Gillette Style Zone that will allow players to create a one-of-kind custom avatar to use in the game. Players can also lace their custom characters with fresh drip from the Gear Store.
Backyard Football Mobile Game
Using your custom avatar, players will earn XP and rewards through a progression system in a new narrative campaign called “The Yard: Underground,” which is available right now in Madden NFL 21 Mobile. Players can also earn points by performing trick plays that can be used toward obtaining unique backyard locations. EA Sports also revealed that there will be seamless progression between the mobile game and Madden NFL 21 on consoles all season long.
Backyard Football Mobile App
The Yard will feature 5-on-5 action, and the games will be played using “house rules” that will be set by the player and feature new animations that lead to momentum-shifting moments and allow players to run up the score and extend play combinations. When “The Yard” arrives with the games August 28 launch on consoles, it will become a 6-on-6 backyard football action which players can play alone, online co-op vs. the CPU or online head-to-head multiplayer in teams of one, two, or three players.
Speaking on the new mode, Seann Graddy, Executive Producer of Madden NFL 21 added:
“We wanted to create a new way for players to express themselves and take on small-sided football in an arcade-style experience that’s completely new to Madden. The Yard is fast, thrilling, and, most importantly, fun. Players will delve into all-new gameplay on mobile and on consoles that will bring to life the backyard football that NFL players and fans grew up loving, where the rules are relaxed, and you can win with attitude.”
